Character Name: April Ludgate
Series: Parks & Recreation
Timeline: Season 5, Episode 18 "Animal Control"
Canon Resource Link: http://parksandrecreation.wikia.com/wiki/April_Ludgate
Character History: April starts out as an intern in the Parks & Recreation department in the Pawnee, Indiana City Hall. She blames her sister Natalie for this misfortune, since she didn't get her out of bed on time to get anything good on internship sign-up day. She is mostly apathetic toward her position, but enjoys the lack of oversight that allows her to troll people. It's safe to say that even though she's smart and capable, April starts out with a definite lack of direction and motivation, both in work and in her personal life. She has a gay boyfriend who has another boyfriend himself (who she dislikes, but tolerates), and this doesn't seem to bother her until she starts to fall for Andy Dwyer, perhaps realizing around that time that there might be something more fulfilling within reach.
Andy is demonstrated as one of the few people who can get her to crack a smile, and she seems to light up in his presence (relatively speaking). They have a little bit of a rocky beginning between his being entirely oblivious and her being jealous of his ex, but when they finally confess their love for each other, they almost immediately get married at Andy's casual suggestion. For their ceremony, they throw a "dinner party" and surprise their guests by exchanging vows with a Justice of the Peace officiating, and neither one looks back despite receiving advice to the contrary. It speaks to the uniqueness of their characters and relationship that this actually sticks, and they grow together significantly as the show progresses. Prior to the ceremony April brushes off Leslie's attempts to get her to re-think her decision, and later expresses her love and gives Leslie a heartfelt hug, presumably for the first time.
Sticking around in close proximity to Andy is April's main motivation to volunteer to become Ron Swanson's assistant. This officially moves her into a full time Parks Department employee, but it's also clearly an excellent fit for both April and Ron. She gets the job by promising him that he won't have to go to meetings, and that she'll scare any visitors away (shutting the door in Tom's face for emphasis when he walks up). Professionally, April develops quite a bit from this point. When Leslie runs for city council, April largely takes over her Deputy Director duties, and does well even though it's overwhelming. Though she's not always sure how to handle the responsibility and she expresses a lot of frustration with how people in their town are largely uncommitted to saving animals that need adopting during an event she organizes, she embraces the job and clearly enjoys it to a degree. From there, she eventually accompanies Ben Wyatt to Washington DC to assist him in running a campaign.
When they return to Pawnee, she shows further initiative in trying to create a dog park, and though this leads to some conflict with Leslie over the proposed location, they eventually band together on a collaboration that combines their respective ideas. It soon comes to light that the Animal Control department is completely dysfunctional, she comes up with the solution of absorbing the tiny, formerly ineffective into the Parks Department, effectively creating herself a new position. Though she sometimes feels out of her depth, she takes on a "fake it 'til you make it" attitude. She later uses this to reassure Andy of how to handle his own professional dilemma of feeling unqualified for his newfound position of authority in London. She explains to him that nobody really knows what they're doing 100% of the time, and everyone essentially has to make it up as they go at some point.
Their marriage remains strong even when they are separated yet again by distance. It's the one thing she always seems entirely sure of, even when other decisions don't stick. Later on, when April gets into Veterinary school, she attends orientation and decides against continuing with the program. Instead, she decides to stay in Pawnee, continue to lead Animal Control, and encourages Andy to play music for children's parties when the opportunity arises. She embraces his "Johnny Karate" act so far as to become his manager, and they are successful, becoming somewhat of a local sensation.
The series skips ahead in time prior to the final season, and she is revealed to still be working for Leslie with the National Parks Service three years later. As the show wraps up, April and Andy go on to buy a really creepy old house to fight off the feeling of being too old or normal or boring, and they eventually have two children, the first of which is named Jack and born on Halloween with April donning full monster makeup while in labor (and incidentally, with "Monster Mash" playing in the background.) Their second child is unnamed, but she's shown to be pregnant again at the very end of the last episode.
Abilities/Special Powers: Nothing, just a regular humanand part wolf
Third-Person Sample:
Though she was still somewhat shocked from landing in some other plane of existence against her will, April decided it was best not to stay in her room alone. She would dwell too much on missing Andy, and that would be the last thing he'd want her to do with a whole new, strange place to explore. Besides, even though she'd heard plenty of warnings from everyone and their mom about certain death and definite loss and the distinct possibility of totally losing your mind, she couldn't really say she hated the place at first glance - no matter how hard she tried. It was definitely her kind of weird, and checking things out would keep her from being too bummed out. Not that Leslie would let her be. Speaking of avoiding things...
As she wandered around and looked more closely at the strange details throughout the mansion, she came to appreciate more and more that things just weren't what they seemed. The attic brought her a few hours of amusement, rifling through crap left behind and picking out a few odds and ends that she liked for whatever reason. Weird skulls, funny crystals, creepy toys... the closet in her room could give her whatever mundane crap she already knew she wanted, but the attic? The attic was full of stuff she never even knew she could find. She returned a few times within her first few days, grabbing a new trophy or trinket on each visit to fill in what she considered to be the start to a fantastically strange collection of oddities.
Snooping around and stealing stuff from the attic was all well and good, but it was when she discovered the stables that April first felt genuinely happy in Wonderland. Meeting a bunch of strangers seemed not only daunting but also kind of gross, but meeting a bunch of horses? Sign her up. It was easy to kill a few afternoons there, grooming, feeding, and getting to know the various animals, and even easier to take joy in their elevated status of "not people." She didn't really care whose horses they were, just that they were infinitely better company than her average fellow resident.
First-Person Sample:
[April seems generally annoyed as she begins speaking, though it's not immediately apparent why. She doesn't bother with an introduction or small talk, instead just launching in to what she has to say.]
So if you can get animals from the closets, but people come and go all the time, what happens to the pets they just selfishly bring into existence for their own lame comfort when they disappear? Do they just have to fend for themselves? Because if so, that's messed up. I haven't seen a whole lot of animals running around or anything [Which is frankly weird, coming from Pawnee] and I'm not sure if that's a good thing, or a bad thing.
[And on that note] I guess my point is, I kind of want to get a dog, but I'd rather adopt than shop, obviously. And I don't want to doom some poor innocent creature to being abandoned here for all eternity when I get to go home, so if anyone knows? That'd be great.
[Yup, these are the things that keep her up at night.]
